A wonderful and original set of Historic Diamonds, paste replica examples made for jewelers display. These are an antique and an original complete set, also over a hundred years in age, they were remade during the 40's era once again, but this is an earlier older set, and very rare to find now..
All the stones are cut from crystal glass, to the exact cuts and dimensions of the original and famous diamond stones they copy.. they have even replicated the miss-cuts to the table of the Orloff, and the side of The Kohinoor Old Cut, showing how they retained these to maximize the size of the gem at the time.
Each is in excellent condition, no chips to mention, only a few very tiny nibbles to edge of a couple. They sparkle quite differently from each other, being cut so varied to reflect the light uniquely to their shapes, a range of sizes, and weights, some quite heavy, each one is very interesting and lovely to hold, the beautifully cut Florentine a citrine yellow colour, the Blue Diamond of course a rich sapphire hue, and the amazing Grand Mogul which is like looking into a kaleidoscope.
Left to Right they are :- The Polar Star 40 carats; The Pigott 82 cts; The Orloff 194.5 cts; The Pasha 49 cts; The Shah of Persia 95 cts; The Nassak 78 cts; The Kohinoor Old Cut 186 cts; The Grand Mogul 279 cts; The Kohinoor New Cut 106 cts; The Sancy 58.5 cts; The Florentine 139.5 cts ; The Regent 136.75 cts; The Jubilee 239 cts; The South Star 125 cts; The Blue Diamond 44 cts. Total weight 1852 carats of Paste.
They are presented in the original box, with embossed lid "Historic Diamonds", the lid although showing patches of wear and a damage spot noticeable to the front outside, still retains its front clasp was once attached to the base with a paper and silk hinge, although this is torn away, and can still be displayed well in the base of the box. The silk lined lid in good presentable condition inside, and in the base the stones are all set in padded recesses to the shape of each, some sitting side on for best display of their forms, having the original printed labels pinned underneath, with name, carat size and origins. The velvet does show some light wear, and a few spots of age, but presents nicely still, the edge paper border is worn as it would have once had the original cord mounted around the edge, the remnants of this are included, as are two newspaper cuttings of interest, that were in the box as found.
The Box measures 280mm x 210mm x 45mm, the Jubilee is 43 x 38 x 27mm in size; The Grand Mogul 38mm across, 30mm deep; and the smallest Polar Star being 23 x 21 x 14mm
Several sets of these Historic Diamonds have sold over the years at major auction houses, mostly later mid century editions as presented in a black velvet settings, I have these for sale here much less than those prices realized, and although the box is in worn condition this set is interesting being an older collection and with its Victorian style presentation.
