These truly are a magnificent pair of Japanese panels. Created in the late 1800s, Meiji period.
Skillfully worked, entirely by hand, silk embroidery on silk. The design of each panel is a wonderful example of asymmetry, at its best, flowing and harmonious. A natural perfection, at which the Japanese excel.
One panel depicts a tumbling mass of Cherry blossom. Home to a small colony of birds. The other panel, has water and grasses at its base, from which beautiful flag Irises grow tall. Together with an abundance of luxurious Chrysanthemums in full bloom.
The background fabric is a rich red satin silk. Still strong and in extremely good condition. Both panels are backed with a self coloured brocade design, hand woven in a straw coloured silk. Each panel measures 64" long x 46" wide. Their condition is excellent, with very little, if any, signs of wear.
It is rare these days to find such a striking pair of panels in this wonderful condition. They would work extremely well as wall hangings, covers, bed covers or even as bedheads.
Stunningly beautiful as well as useful!
