Victorian Papier Mache Handkerchief/Hanky Box

Offered for sale is a beautiful example of an antique papier mache box. The creation of papier mache, is a skill that requires a great deal of time and patience!! The Victorians had it off to a fine art and even created pieces of furniture using the technique, which was extremely popular then and remains so today.

This box measures 7 1/2" X 7 1/2" square x 1 3/8" high. The interior of both the box and the lid are a bright cinnabar red. The exterior is a uniform black. The lid is beautifully decorated with delicately portrayed daisies, primulas and foliage. The design completed with the addition of a single butterfly.

The size of this box would indicate that it was made to hold handkerchiefs but in truth it would be useful for storing many things in style!

The condition is really good for its age. There is the usual gentle scuffing through use but no major issues. The interior of the box shows marks in each corner that look as though they were made by pencil lead - maybe it was used for stationery storage in the past?

A truly beautiful and useful item. Wonderfully decorative.
