Birds Eye Maple, Renaissance Revival Youth Bed, Crib, Baby Bed,

We have purchased a fine American Renaissance Revival museum quality youth bed or crib which was bought out of a home in Hyde Park New York. Dates from the 1860s and is American in origin.

We see this as the quality of Pottier and Stymus of New York or Herter Brothers. The quality, style, form, woods, and other characteristics are common to both of these fine firms. However, we have found no marks where expected as the underside of the rails, headboard and footboard have been coated decades ago with an appropriate mustard pigmented stain and binder for protection. Not an uncommon practice of the times. The selection of woods is of the highest quality as well as the use of turned and fluted corners. The carving is incise carving, not applied carving.

The bed is in excellent condition, wearing the original coating which had been cleaned and recoated decades back. The incise carvings so well executed still show some of the original gilding within. The birds eye maple is trimmed in rosewood. The rosewood is the darker woods you see in the photos.

The spindled side rails will unlatch to fold down. The spacing of the spindles in the side rails are in compliance with present day safety standards so this can be used with confidence for your loved one.
