Set of eight---eight!-- antique American Philadelphia ribbon back or open ladder back chairs. Many call such sets second period. This set of eight ribbon back chairs is complete with the elusive two arms chairs. These are not your typical 1920-40 set. These are surely 1880s and of very high quality. Possibly earlier but I have not looked for a label or makers mark but will do so when we carefully remove the upholstery to reglue these beauties.
This is an honest set and were hand made with machine assist by a master craftsman in true mahogany. The center rung is actually attached to the left and right rungs by a half dovetail, the rungs, seat rails and back horizontal pieces are all done with mortice and tenon construction. As good as it gets and possibly older that I think. I will know when they are disassembled for gluing. Gluing will be done with the appropriate hot hide glue originally used.
The arms are a hand carved scroll design. The quatrefoil pierced work, in the center of the ribbon is well executed befitting of the hand work on these chairs as is the beading and other refinements. The leg style is the molded straight leg.
No false hype, these are much better than I thought when I bought them. I do like surprises like that. These are at the top of the line!!
38.5 inches tall, 19 inches wide by 18.5 inches deep, 18.5 inches seat height. Side chairs measure the same, however he seats are 0.5 inches narrower.
The needlepoint is in wonderful condition--but--the chairs need to be and will be reglued and restored. They are just too good to let out any other way. The seats will be removed, then cleaned, the chairs reglued, restored then the seats re-webbed, re-padded and the original needlepoint put back on. The corner pieces within the seat frame are hand fit into notches, much like the notched fitting done in timber framing.
Price is restored and if you have viewed these before, I have had to raise the price after having the upholsterer look them over. If you have an upholstery shop you like then an adjustment can be made on price.
Please realize when shopping for chairs a set that has been reglued and/or restored properly will be your best buy. Chairs take more abuse than any other piece of furniture in the home so most are loose, some very loose.
To be sure, this is a fine set of chairs and if interested, I have a large mahogany table to accommodate these that can be restored at the same time to insure a good match and make a wonderful set.
