This is a wonderful Victorian period chromo litho print featuring a botanical theme. It is comprised of water lilies and irises on a dramatic black background. The print as it is framed measures 7 1/4" by 16 ¼". The frame measures 17 ¼” x 25”. The print is framed under glass and is in very good condition with no fading and staining, there is one smudge mark which is shown in the photos. The frame is also in very good condition, there is a little bit of a chip which has been repaired on the top right hand corner and another chip at the left hand bottom corner and the left hand border of the frame. I don’t know if the frame is original to the piece as it has been reframed at some point in time, it is however an old frame.
The back of the print also has a note attached reiterating the information which is hidden beneath the pink matte stating the name of the print “Water Lillies” – Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1875 by Colton, Zahn and Roberts in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington.
Please note that it should read Colton, Zahm and Roberts, it appears the Zahm name was often seen as Zahn. This was a famous New York firm who specialized in the sale of prints.
Chromo-lithographed and published by Colton, Zahn and Roberts No. 172 William Street, New York.
There is another label on the back by the Montreal framing studio who reframed the item. This would have been some time ago as this business no longer exists.
Very attractive decorative piece - great display print for the right décor.
