This sterling silver compote is very impressive to say the least! I love the border motif, not only around the rim of the bowl, but also around the entire base. I consider this compote to be a real eye catcher.
This sterling piece would look wonderful no matter where and how you decide to use it. Certainly you could use it for fruit, special desserts, or even filled with decorative holiday items such as Christmas balls.
The decoration bordering the rim includes oval motifs housing urns alternating with flowers. The banding decoration between the ovals is urns with floral filigree throughout. In the low section of the bowl is a narrow decoration that is there but non-descript. The base is heavily decorated with urns and filigree.
The bottom of the base reads "Wedgwood – Patent Pending – J.S. Co. – Sterling – T40" with a logo of a knight with a shield below it. There is an "S" in the center of the shield.
The compote is 10" round X 5 1/8" high X 4 ½" (across the base). The compote weighs 15.345 troy ounces. The condition of the compote is very good. There are some scratches in the center of the bowl, yet I do not find them offensive. There are no cracks, denting or pitting, circa 1900.
