This antique walnut paper or document clip is an amazing piece of craftsmanship. The detail carving was done in the form of "spoon carving". The decoration was done on both the front and back of this clip.
Above the clip opening, there is vertical carving to the base of the rounded top section. This top section also has carving which extends from the base of the top section, over the top, and down the opposite side to the base of the top section. On both ends of the top section there are tic-tac-toe carved designs. Everything about this carved piece is well executed scale wise and otherwise. Simply stated, it is a "one of a kind"!
Most importantly, this clip retains its original patina. On the flat lower lip of the front there is a name imprinted that reads "C.E. Dow". I am assuming it's the carver's name.
What a statement this clip will make resting on a desk or a side table. Talk about a conversation piece!
This fine piece of wood working is 7 ¾" long X ¾" wide. The condition is excellent. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines. Circa 1850-60's.
