This Chinese carved ivory is fascinating to look at. The carve detail on this piece is quite wonderful. The carvings on the brush pot are grasses, one gourd, a single lotus flower and the grasshopper. As you can see from the photos, there is a single opening in the top of the gourd which was used to house a single paint brush, bristle side down.
I love the carved detail of this piece. There are no signs of a signature anywhere. I purchased this from an old time dealer. It was, for years, in his personal collection of Asian art.
The piece is 2 ½" tall X 2" long X 3/4" wide (at the base). The depth of the brush opening is 2" deep. The condition is very good. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines, circa 1800.
