Antique Penobscot (Maine) Indian Berry Basket
It is hand made with splint ash which is a common and plentiful material here in Maine. I would probably display it with a few clumps of artificial berries in the basket and leave it on the counter, or hang it somewhere in the kitchen.
Based on what our local Indians have taught me, the smaller baskets are more difficult to make than larger baskets.
This basket is 4" tall (basket only), 8" tall (top of handle) X 5 ½" wide (across the top) X 4" wide (across the bottom). The condition of the basket, especially for its age and size, is very good. There is some old re-wrapping around the upper frame, otherwise there are no breaks or missing basketry. Circa 1900-1910.
