The delicately carved ball has a tremendous amount of carving on it, especially for its size. The subject matter is of a carved dragon that totally consumes the entire exterior of the Netsuke ball. I can not imagine the amount of time that was spent to carve this amount of detail.
Each side of the ivory netsuke has a brass rim (round) set into the side of the Netsuke. These two (2) rims are attached to a brass sleeve that runs completely through the Netsuke, from one rim to the other. Also over one of these rims is an additional rim, this one being crimped. The crimped rim sets under a partial brass sleeve. By pulling this crimped rim outward, the crimped rim and the partial brass sleeve can be removed from the Netsuke.
This Netsuke is completely original. I purchased this Netsuke from an old time antique dealer. It was in his private collection for years.
The piece is ¾" round. The condition is very good. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines. Circa 1800.
