This early Mulberry cream pitcher is charming – both for its style and its size. Mulberry often has a flowing effect similar to flow blue. It is the color of the crushed mulberries, a medium purple with a gray tinge. This pitcher was made around 1830 so there is some crudeness to it but I find it absolutely charming. The inside spout of this pitcher has a smudge in the pattern. The pattern resembles Asian motifs, ie pagodas and urns.
The pitcher is 3” wide (4 ½” from outer spout to outer handle) X 5” high. The condition is very good. There is a lot of crazing and a large stretch mark around the lower rim close to the base. The stretch mark is a factory defect to be expected since the piece is so early and manufactured back when there was not a great deal of sophistication in manufacturing. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines. Circa 1830’s.
