This small size butternut mortar is hand turned with an amazing amount of detail throughout. I personally like the various turnings and the five (5) rows of turned rings.
The size is also nice since I am assuming that it was made to be used personally, not commercially. The pestle is forged steel and I am assuming it was made specifically for the mortar. Without a doubt, this mortar and pestle have a wonderful decorative look!
The mortar is 5 ½” high X 3 ½” wide (upper lip) X 3 ½” wide (across the base). The pestle is 6 ¼” long X ¾” wide (at top) X 1 ½” wide (at base). The condition of this mortar and pestle is very good. Both pieces have wonderful patina. There is one narrow crack in the mortar running from the top to the bottom turning, circa 1840 – 50’s.
