This yelloware smoke stand is just wonderful. The subject matter tickles me. There is a full figured duck on the right front section of the stand. The duck’s beak has a hold of a frog’s leg and the duck is trying to drag the frog out of the swamp. As you can see, the frog is full bodied and is camouflaged by the cat-nine tails and leaves.
This smoker houses cigarettes in the large holder. Next to the holder is a small tree trunk which would house the wooden matches. Directly in the front portion of the stand is the dish area to place used matches. On the right side is the match strike surface.
I purchased this smoke stand from a friend of mine who is a retired antique dealer. This particular smoke stand was made by Eichwald Pottery Co which was located in Austria. There is a factory stamp “Eichwald” on the bottom of the stand together with an “A” and the numbers “2438”.
I am amazed at the condition of this smoker. There are no cracks or hairlines. There is one chip on the right front section of the base. There is also a chip on the bottom right rear of the cigarette holder. The smoker stand is 7 ¾” long X 5 ½” wide X 4 ½” high. Truly the condition of this unusual piece is very good - with the two chips mentioned, circa 1900.
