This Shaker swing handle oval sewing carrier has lapped (finger) seams with original copper tacks and worn copper color silk damask lining in the interior. The carrier houses the original pin cushion, needle (poplar) case and strawberry. There is also a wax which was used to wax thread. Three (3) of the four (4) pieces in the oval carrier are still attached to the ribbon. The strawberry is not attached to the original ribbon. The ribbon is a burnt orange silk and is original to the carrier.
The bottom of the carrier retains its original Shaker stamp in black. It reads: “Sabbathday Lake Shakers Maine” with its original trademark, “SC”.
The carrier is 9 ¼” long X 6” wide X 3 ¼” high (not including the handle). With the handle straight up, the piece is 7 ½” tall, circa mid-19th century.
The piece is in as found condition. There are very minor scratches and one (1) small split on the edge of the base where a tack attaches the side wall to the base of the carrier. There are two areas on the carrier where shellac ran when originally being applied. For the age of the carrier I consider it to be in very good condition.
