Antique: Canton Covered Vegetable Dish, Porcelain

This antique covered vegetable dish is impressive to look at. The decoration on this piece is hand painted in light to dark blue underglaze on a white ground. The pattern consists of houses, mountains, trees, a boat and a bridge. The outer blue banding has a wide band of diagonal lines. The inner band has diagonal lines with a scalloped edge. The outside of the dish is mostly white with a small blue motif in the center of each of the four (4) sides. The finial on the cover is a strawberry which indicates that its an earlier piece of Canton. As is normal, the finial has a small hole which is necessary to assist in the firing process.

The vegetable dish is 9 ¼ “ square X 8 3/8” X 6” high (from base to the top of the finial), circa 1790 – 1840.

The base has not chips, cracks or hairlines. The strawberry finial has a lot of chipped paint and chipped glazing, normal for a piece that has been used a great deal.
