The antique shamrock carved Bogwood pipe is exceptionally carved. The overall motif is of shamrocks (2), one on each side of the pipe bowl. We feel the carving on the front of the bowl is a harp. "Tis music that calms the soul, just as a pipe and bowl of ale at the end of the day".
No more than 4,000 years ago Ireland was heavily forested. Due to major climate change much of the forest was enveloped in peat bogs that grew up to 30 feet in depth, consuming large portions of the Ireland forest. The former trees, submerged in the peat bogs, underwent a unique transformation in color with oak becoming black, yew taking on a reddish brown and pine to a golden oak color.
With the harvesting of peat for fuel, the trees were once again exposed, retrieved and dried very slowly until most of the moisture was removed. This wood, which was soft as cheese when initially removed from the bogs, became as hard as steel once completely dried. Simply stated, bogwood is a "pure miracle of nature" and this wood was transformed by many of Ireland cavers into various objects.
The overall condition is very good with the exception of the stem which clearly shows use. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines.
