Vintage 1920s brown silk velvet dress with crepe chiffon insert decorated with rhinestones, pave rhinestone buttons at hip, rows of pintucks, swag at left hip. It is shown on a size six mannequin. Measurements as follows, draped bust 42, hip 41, width between shoulders in back 14.5 inches so meant for a smaller woman, length from shoulder to hem 43 inches.
Condition, please note all of the following. For the material, 90 year old silk velvet, good but not perfect, with two cinder holes at the bottom front hem as shown last photo. They can be camouflaged with a dark colored slip, or have some brown silk basted in behind. I would go with the slip, personally. These holes are common in the silk fabrics of the 1920s, for the simple fact that everyone was suddenly smoking, drinking, and as you can imagine, getting careless with flicking the cigarettes. Women had previously not been around smoking and drinking, let alone doing it themselves in social settings, and things got a bit reckless. Silk clothing and organdy table linen from this period frequently has cinder holes. A good time was had by all, which is irritating to us decades later, but must have been fun at the time. Where was I? Yes. The material. If held up to a strong light source, some thinning of the silk fiber can be found in little single threads, but this dress is basically very sound. The dress appears to have been in the middle of being altered, as the sleeve cuffs were taken in to fit more closely, and the pave rhinestone buttons appear to have originally been placed above the hip tucks, and were basted on lower, where it appears some snaps were going to be sewn on or sewn back on to close the dress at the hip and elsewhere. It will need the buttons sewn on, as they are loose, and snaps sewn on to fasten the dress closed. In the silk chiffon of the rhinestone spangled insert, there is a small rust mark and a small break in the chiffon, shown, which pretty much lies in the folds and isn't terribly noticeable, though present. All in all, good condition for age and materials, but not perfect. Clean and has been nicely stored.
