Early 19th century Santos wood carving of St. Anthony and the infant Jesus. St. Anthony of Padua is the Patron Saint of Lost things. He is petitioned for help in finding lost articles and persons. St. anthony is wearing a brown Franciscan robe holding the infant Jesus in one hand and, at one time, probably held a lily in the other. The Santos is handcarved with very nice details and polychrome painted. St. Anthony's face and the infant Jesus have been thickly gessoed and given additional embellishment. The Santos stands 7" high. It is in good antique condition with the missing hand and a crack to the base---all acceptable for this type of delicate art. Santos figures are a favorite of mine and I like to display them in a small vignette (see last photo).
