Antique French mother of pearl servant or desk bell from the Napoleon III Period. The piece is made of mother of pearl shell with gilt ormolu accents and rests on an alabaster base. Push the looped wire on the top and the bell rings. Popular with Grand Tour travelers, the bells were used to call servants and to signal for next course at the dining table of the well-to-do. Today they are very collectible with the Grand Tour and Palais Royal enthusiasts. The bell measures 4.5" high with a 3.5" diameter base. In good antique condition with no broken shell. The gilt ormolu band on the base has some very minor dents which is typical of a delicate piece of 150+ years old.
