Precious little French black opaline glass casket--probably to hold sugar. Its petite size is so charming---3 3/8" wide by 2"deep by 3" high. On its brass base it measures 3 1/2" wide by 2 1/4" deep by 3 5/8" high. Hand decorated enamel painting of flowers, a bird, and butterfly in peach and white embellish the top, front, and back of the piece. It has beveled edges accented with gold gilt which has mostly rubbed off over time. It does have three tiny flea bites to the glass---two on the back (see photo) and one on the front. The black glass disguises these nicely and are only noticeable under direct light. In my opinion, they do not detract from the piece. The casket dates to the early to mid 19th century. A SWEET little piece!
