The strength and elegance of the thoroughbred horse is beautifully executed in this large oil on canvas. Both horse and jockey are painted with superb realistic detail as they pose with the racetrack in the background. Rich vivid colors make this painting come to life. The painting is signed in the lower right corner "Geo Arnull" for George Arnull and dated 88 for 1888. George Arnull (1849-1894) was an equestrian artist who specialized in the painting of horses. It is also stamped on the reverse with Geo Arnull. The painting has been relined at some time and 3 patches can be seen on the back. This has been done to a good standard and is not noticeable from the front. The piece is in a lovely gold frame which compliments it nicely. The painting measures 24" wide by 18" high. Frame measures 29.5" by 23.5". As I am not an art expert, I cannot say with absolute certainty that this is an authentic George Arnull. It is very much his style and of the period. It is a wonderful piece which would be a lovely addition to an art collection.
