Fabulous silverplate figural inkwell with three whippets/Italian greyhounds by the Joseph Ridge & Co. Sheffield, England (1881-1886). Three beautifully cast whippets hold on their backs a silver ball which conceals the inkwell. The dogs set on a 5" diameter silverplate base. The entire piece measures 5" tall. The glass inkwell liner looks to be a replacement but fits nicely and has no chips or cracks. The silverplate is in excellent condition----looks like it has never been used! It has a lovely mellow patina to the silver (I polished it lightly, but will clean to a bright shine). Marked on the base with the maker's mark and the numbers 58 and 12087(see photo). A very elegant and sophisticated piece which would enhance a desk or secretary. Rare to find one in such a fine condition.
