Presented is a beautiful Chinese export carved ivory cane handle. This was made in the mid to late 1800s from elephant ivory and is very high quality. The carving depicts a heron perched on an ancient tree. The rounded layers of bark and craggy branches are beautifully carved in high relief. The piece has been decorated with a dark ink to increase the sense of depth to the piece. The heron is also carved with amazing detail. The individual feathers are clearly visible. The top of the carving has its original silver pins. This will make it much easier to reconvert this into a handle back into a cane or for some other purpose.
The condition is excellent. Some of the ink has rubbed away over time, but this is minor and could be said to enhance the beauty and age of the piece. There are no breaks, no cracks, no splits, no dents, no chips and no repairs.
The piece measures 5 1/8 inches long.
