1850's Pique Tortoise Shell Sash Buckle with 10 or 14 karat Gold Inlay

Presented is a wonderful 1850s carved tortoise shell buckle with at least 10 karat (probably 14k) pique gold inlay. The inlay is done in an intricate fish-scale pattern with a tile border. The buckle is for a cloth sash, which can be worn around the waist or over slung over the shoulder and across the chest. The buckle has sturdy bronze or brass fittings. This was very likely made in America.

The buckle is unmarked. The inlay has been tested with nitric acid and is guaranteed to be at least 10K gold and is likely 14 karat gold.

The condition is excellent. The inlay and shell is in fabulous shape. There is a very tiny loss to one corner edge of the buckle, so tiny you have to hold it quite close to your face to see it. Quite minor. There are also some extremely small fleabites in the underside; where they are not visible. There are no breaks, no cracks, no splits, no dents, no other chips and no repairs.

The buckle measures about 3 by 1 1/2 inches.
