Presented is a very nice ivory and sterling silver carving set. The fork head and knife blade are made of carbon steel. The handles are made of carved, polished ivory with sterling silver pommels and collars. The collars and pommels are decorated with matching gadrooning. There is a large sunflower design on the bottom of the fork and knife. The ivory handles are monogrammed with the initials JRL in cursive script. The fork has a rest built into the head. This set was made in England in 1878. These cannot be washed in the dish washer. The blade can easily be sharpened to a razor edge.
The carving set is marked sterling on the metal collars and pommels of the handles. The pommels also have the UK product registration diamond, which indicates the item is metal and was made in 1878. The knife blade is marked close to handle, and the fork is marked on the back of its head with ENGLAND for the location of manufacture. The knife blade is also marked on the reverse side with B. B. & B. Philadelphia for the retailer.
The condition is excellent. There are two lines in each ivory handle. The handles are still strong and tight to the steel. There are no breaks, no other splits, no dents and no repairs.
The serving fork measures approximately 12 1/4 inches long. The knife measures approximately 13 3/8 inches long.
