Presented is a fabulous quality carved ivory and sterling silver salad set by the Gorham Manufacturing Company. The sterling silver connectors in the middle of each piece have bright cut engraving and applied ball decoration. The silver has a matte finish and is typical of the aesthetic movement. The ivory handle of each piece is beautifully carved and finished. The lower piece of ivory which terminates in the bowl or the fork is stamped Gorham Co.. There are fine dark age lines in the ivory. These are to be expected and are quite minor. There are no true splits or cracks in either piece.
There are no marks on the sterling silver connecting centerpiece. We have tested these connector and guarantee them to be sterling silver. This set was almost certainly made between 1875 to 1885. The handle of the fork is very slightly loose as is the lower part of the spoon. Both could easily be tightened up, but it is not necessary since it is hardly noticeable. Everything is secure and nothing is going to come apart. Two of the tines on the fork have a small chip. See photos. Other than the very minor things I have mentioned above there are no breaks no dents no repairs no monograms no monogrammed removals and no problems of any kind.
This is a very large set. The spoon measures 11 3/4 inches. The fork measures 11 3/4 inches.
These are some of the finest quality pieces of carved ivory and sterling silver from the American aesthetic movement that you can find. You will not be disappointed.
