Fine American Victorian Shark Vertebrae Bone/Tortoise Shell Cane Mid 1800s

Presented is a great antique cane made out of shark vertebrae. The vertebrae are securely mounted with bone or tortoise shell spacers at intervals along the shaft. There is a piece of carved ivory for the top of the cane. This piece was made in America between the 1830s and the 1870s.

The tip at the bottom of the cane is missing and perhaps a few of the bone or tortoise spacers have been lost, but this is fairly minor. The tip at the bottom of the cane can easily be replaced with a wooden or rubber stopper/cap. The cane has a bit of a bend to it as you can see in the photographs. One of the tortoise shell or bone spacers is chipped, and there is a crack in one of the pieces of vertebrae, but everything is still very secure. Otherwise, the condition is excellent. There are no other chips, no other cracks, and no repairs.

The cane is 26 1/2 inches long including the metal shaft at the bottom.
