Great Antique Chinese Carved Ivory Engraved Brass Knife Letter Opener
Presented is an interesting antique Chinese carved ivory and brass knife. The ivory handle is nicely carved with intricate openwork flower and leaf designs around the bottom. There is an unusual calcified or fossilized finish to the ivory in some areas as you can see in the last photograph. The brass blade is engraved, on both sides, with swords, flowers, leaves and other designs on a finely textured background. The entire piece is really well made. This would make a wonderful letter opener or paper cutter. The knife was made in the second half of the 1800s.
The knife is in good condition overall. There is one piece on the handle that has come off and been glued back on, which we have shown in the last photograph. This is the part that also has that same calcified finish as mentioned earlier There is some glue from the repair showing, but otherwise it is not too noticeable. The handle is still very strong and secure. The ivory has excellent cross-hatching. There are no chips, no cracks, no dents, no other breaks, and no other repairs.
The knife is 2 inches wide and 10 7/8 inches long.
