Presented is a wonderful carved ivory elephant figurine with magnificent shibayama inlay decoration. The ivory is very well carved out of a walrus or hippo tusk and exquisitely inlaid with coral, mother of pearl, and perhaps some type of horn. Originally the elephant probably had a little puzzle ball or a small round colored stone to sit on the top, but this is missing. You can put whatever you like in its place. This piece was probably made in the 1950s.
Unfortunately the top of the elephant’s trunk is chipped and the tip is missing as you can see in the photographs. This could be smoothed down so that it is not as noticeable. Otherwise, the condition is excellent. There are no other chips, no cracks, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.
The elephant figurine measures 2 7/8 inch long, 3/4 inch wide, and 1 3/4 inches tall.
