1884 Superb Sterling Silver Carved Ivory Handled Trowel
The trowel is hallmarked on the reverse with the lion passant for sterling silver, the crown for the city of Sheffield, the date letter “R” for 1884, the duty mark of Queen Victoria’s head, and a maker’s mark of JR, possibly for Joseph Rodgers.
The condition is excellent. The ivory handle has one hairline along its length, but this is minor. There is some looseness to the handle, but this is because of the silver pin, not because of the ivory. The ivory itself is structurally sound and the handle is in no danger of falling out. I believe there has been a monogram removal to the large open flat part of the trowel. The blade of the trowel is thick and heavy enough that it has not been structurally compromised. This trowel is still strong and quite usable. There are no chips, no cracks, no dents, no breaks, and no repairs.
The trowel is 12 1/4 inches long.
