Solid Ivory Stand for Newel Post Lights, Lamp or Vase, Wonderful Cross-Hatching

Presented is a great pair of carved ivory pieces, perhaps used as a base for a newel post lights or as a stand for a vase or lamp. These large pieces of solid ivory have fabulous cross-hatching. You just don’t see cross-hatching and graining any better than this. The ivory has a wonderful patina, giving it a nice aged look. The ivory was originally fashioned in the late 1800s or early 1900s, probably between 1890 and 1920.

I do not know what these pieces were originally intended for. I do not believe they were ever directly connected. Certainly something else was mounted between them with one piece serving as the base and the other as the cap on top. The cap has a recessed area around the center. The inner diameter of the recessed area measures about 3 inches in diameter, and the outer diameter of the recessed area measures about 4 inches, so this could serve as a lid for any vase or lamp that has a closing diameter at the top between 3 and 4 inches. The base has an octagonal design. Someone fitted a piece of wood into the center, probably so that it could be made into a lamp, but I do not know if this was the ivory’s original purpose.

The condition is excellent. There are a couple of minor age lines, I do not classify these is cracks. There are no chips, no cracks, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.

The ivory cap measures 4 5/8 inches in diameter overall and has a height of 7/8 inch.

The ivory base measures 5 inches by 5 inches and stands 1 1/2 inches tall.
