MINTON for TIFFANY c.1931 gold cobalt dessert or tea set (13pc) H4316

MINTON made this luxurious dessert service for Tiffany & Co. in 1931, pattern #H4316 (13 pieces). Serving four people with generous sized cups, side plates and serving plate this set is equally suitable for lunch, afternoon tea or a continental breakfast. Cafe-au-lait would look so appealing against the pure white interiors of the bone china cups. All exterior surfaces are washed with an ivory ground and the beautiful smooth porcelain makes one think of Devon cream. The curvaceous rococo shape of each piece is accented with scalloped, relief moulded borders in the form of acanthus leaves, with hand enamel painted bands in cobalt blue and gold, expertly applied. (The base of the cups shows several workmen's marks for gilders and enamelers.) The footed cup with raised handle is an unusual shape that was known in the 19C as 'Persian'. In fact this set recalls Minton's finest work and is strikingly similar to pattern #3351 from 1836. Everything about this service says luxury and this is what we expect from two of the world's most renowned companies, Minton and Tiffany.

Condition is excellent in three of the four place settings; scant utensil marks and gentle wear to some gilding and enameling. The fourth place setting has two defects: one cup has a firing fault where the bowl meets the foot and this is slightly crazed and stained, but not visible until you turn the cup over; one saucer has a tight hairline in the centre well. There are no other chips, cracks or hairlines. I have reduced the price by $100 to reflect these defects - the fourth place setting is essentially free. Each piece bear the "Mintons" trademark and "Tiffany & Co New York, Made in England". Various hard-to-read impressed marks including one that is clearly the year cypher for 1931. Pattern numbers H4300-4399 were released by Minton in 1931-33. The letter H signified 'richly decorative china tableware'. Serving plate measures 10.75"D x 1"H. Side plate 8"D. Saucer 5.75"D. Footed cup 4"D x 2"H (both exclusive of handle). A perfect gift for someone who loves the finer things of life!
