19th C. Cup and Saucer, Oriental Scenic w Gold Decoration
The previous owner of this small cup and saucer had identified it as Lowestoft, though I am not sure that it is. Whatever the case, the cup and saucer is quite lovely, a blue and white Oriental theme with an intricate design of Japanese houses and mountains with birds and trees and much artistry. The cup is demitasse sized and the handle, rims, and foot are all trimmed in gold. There is also a fancy gold border overlaying the rim of the cup. Condition is good; there is a tiny nick on the rim of the saucer and a hairline on the back about 2" radiating from the rim to the foot rim. These are so small and insignificant that I mention them only for disclosure because they do not affect the appearance of the cup and saucer. The saucer is 4 and 7/8" in diameter. The cup is 2 3/8" high and 2.25" in diameter. The sides of the saucer are turned up, almost forming a small bowl. The handle of the cup is placed low, about halfway down the exterior. Rims of both are scalloped, with the scallops rising to form a point.
