Vintage, lidded box with an octagonal panel etched in the top featuring a square-rigged sailing ship featured in the center. The image appears to contain certain stylistic elements consistent with the art deco era, especially the lines around the ship suggesting wave and cloud movement. The box itself is 10" long, 7.25" wide and 3.75" high. The box has aged to a pleasing patina, and I will leave it to the buyer as to whether he or she wishes to have it polished. There are some scratches on the top, but these may dissipate with polishing. The front of the box has another elongated, octagonal panel featuring crashing waves, soaring gulls, and shells on a beach. The sides have images of a compass flanked by anchors and a trident. The base of the box is wood and inside is lined with velvet. Interesting old box with the top part of the locking mechanism intact but the lower part missing. This could probably be replaced at an antique hardware store.
