Wedgwood Poet & Heroes 8 1/2" Plate William Cullen Bryant 1894 England
Wedgwood's Poets and Heroes series of historical plates includes this one honoring William Cullen Bryant, American poet, 1794-1878. Bryant's works: Thanatopsis, The Death of the Flowers, and The Battle Field have excerpts printed in separate cartouches on the plate. The raised border includes C-scrolls enclosing reserves. Bryant's portrait is a screen print in the center of the plate in brown ink. His long white hair and flowing beard portray a man of learning.

The 8 1/2 inch plate is impressed P to indicate it is made of Pearlware and DXW for the year of manufacture,1894. It also has BRYANT printed in brown letters. Bryant was known as a romantic poet and journalist as well as the editor of the New York Evening Post.
The edges of the plate shows wear/soiling from handling but otherwise the plate is very good and has no chips, nor cracks. The plate comes from the Rosen Collection.
