Wedgwood Clare Leighton ICE CUTTING Plate 10 ½" Queens Ware New England Industries c.1952

Wedgwood's Ice Cutting plate from the New England Industries series was taken from an engraving by Clare Leighton. The very detailed scene depicts five men sawing blocks of ice from a frozen pond. Three of the men are using poles to guide the blocks through the water and into the ice house where it will be stored and used through the winter. The scene is done in shades of black and gray.

The back of the 10 1/2 inch plate carries this description:"Ice Cutting: The sturdy New Englander exulted in the cold, sharpened his saws when the thermometer went below zero and waited for the blue water to turn grey and thicken into ice. Thus it remained until the arrival of electricity, leaving the ice business to fall into disuse with a vanishing industry."

This plate is one of a series of twelve manufactured by Wedgwood in 1952. The condition is very good with no chips, nor cracks, nor flakes.
