Wedgwood Clare Leighton FARMING Plate 10 ½" New England Industries c.1952

Wedgwood commissioned a series of plates showing New England Industries. Clare Leighton designed this 10 1/2" Queens Ware plate showing a farmer mowing and raking his hay crop. The shading of black to gray to white shows the skill Leighton used in her wood engravings.

The scene is of a farmer who is using what is known as a grain cradle in New England. The farmer shows strength and skill and represents the dignity of all the New England Industries illustrated by Leighton. There is a wonderful treed hillside behind the farm's buildings.

The back of the 10 1/2 inch plate carries this description:"Matching their fortitude to the strength of the earth, the first New England settlers, who arrived in "The Mayflower", brought forth a bountiful harvest from the new land. The rhythm in the lives of the New England farmers, in its seasonal pattern, will go onward the same."

This plate is one of twelve Wedgwood manufactured in this series in 1952. The condition is very good without cracks, chips, or flakes.
