The mottled navy blue ground on this Carlton Ware cigarette box, with its New Micado scene, enables the gold and enamel colors to stand out. The scene is of a man poling his canopied barge on a lake in front of a moon bridge. Enamel colors of green, orange, yellow and blue are hand painted. Gold highlights are used throughout the scene as well as a leafy border around the cover's edge.
The bottom half of the box has different decorations on all four sides. They include storks and a wide branching tree. Inside, the box has a pearlized luster glaze and includes another gold tree with hand painted berries. The cover is 4" by 5 1/4" and the bottom half is 1 ¼" by 3 3/8 " by 4 ¾".The mark is the black script Carlton Ware/Made in England/"Trade Mark". There is also a round yellow paper label with numbers in pencil: 2728/1398. I believe the piece dates to 1940-50.
There is a very small loss of gold on one area of the lid's rim. The box is in excellent condition, without chips, cracks, nor flakes. You will find many uses for this box and it would be stunning sitting on a desk or coffee table
