English Carlton Ware produced this 3 1/2 inch cobalt blue luster vase from 1936-40.The pattern is called "Japan" and features an orange roofed pagoda on a fantasy landscape of green and gold enamel.
An orange enameled Sampan floats on gold water and a fantasy tree is hand painted on the reverse side. Two birds with blue, green and yellow plumage face each other near the edge of the vase.
The two wavy gold handles stand out from the body of the vase and the gold is repeated in the rim and on the foot. The condition of all the enamels and gold trim is very good. The body has no chips nor crack just minor crazing on the bottom.
The vase is impressed with the number 1696/C and has the gold Carlton Ware Made in England Trade Mark. There are two dashes of color to identify the painters.
