This Chinese Shiwan red glazed pottery vase is from the Guangdong Province in Southern China. The mark reads 瓦公窑 Wa Gong Yao "Wa Gong Kiln." This is a well-known modern kiln which started operation in the late 1980s. The 10 inch high hand modeled vase has applied prunus fruits trailing down the side much like the figures on Sumida pottery. The fruits, plums, are glazed in white and purple with green leaves and brown stems.
The sturdy earthiness of this piece makes it appear timeless in style. It fits so well with Arts & Crafts period décor as well as having a primitive country feeling. The condition is very good, with a few glaze drips that seem part of the primitiveness of its construction.
The mark is well impressed and clear. As I do not read Chinese, I appreciate the assistance I received in identifying the maker. The vase dates to the mid 1980s.
