The English company Edge, Malkin Co made this large cup and saucer in the Chusan pattern circa 1880s. Part of an extensive dinner service, the heavily patterned design reflects the revival in Chinoiserie patterns.
Two men in a garden are watching a large blue peacock in front of them. The men's garments are glazed in shades of pink and yellow. Behind them is a fence with a weeping tree covered with pink flowers. The edges inside the saucer and inside the cup have a border design in salmon and brown. All of the colors appear on the cream colored ground. The luster treatment gives a silvery appearance to the border.
The saucer is 6 3/8 inches in diameter by 1 1/8 inches high. The diameter of the cup is 4 1/4 inches and is 2 5/8 inches high. The maker's mark on the saucer is a Whippet standing over a ribbon E, M, & Co. The letter B appears below that and the name Chusan.
There are no flaws I can find . No chips, cracks, nor flakes. The expected crazing of this ceramic does not appear. All good!
