Mounted Portrait of Mother & Daughter Ca. 1917
This is a full size 3 1/2 inch by 5 1/2 inch photograph mounted (glued) in a fiber paper folder with an oval frame, intended for display. Written on the inside is "Doris Eggers Middle & daughter April 1917." The folder is embossed beneath the oval with P. Holgersen, 1554 N. California Ave., Chicago. I assume this would have been the studio that produced the photograph. On the outside front you see what is a swastika. The origin of this symbol goes back thousands of years, and was likely a religious symbol originally. Later, it came to symbolize life and love. I prefer to believe that it's use in this context is positive and was not intended to reflect anti-semitism.
