This locomotive, SP 4294, a cab forward design, was the last steam locomotive purchased by the Southern Pacific Railroad. SP 4294 remains on display to this day at the California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento, California. The card definitely rates an excellent for condition. It measures 4 3/16 by 5 15/16 inches, not a standard size. Plastichromes were first available in 1939, of course this is a much later card, dating maybe to the 1960's or 70's. SP 4294 was in service from March 19, 1944 to March 5, 1956, and hauled both freight and passenger service, occasionally pulling the famous Overland Limited over the infamous Donner Pass route between Sacramento and Sparks, Nevada. Thanks for stopping by today.
