What a super find that took a little research to write this description. In 1970, Severin Wunderman, a Swiss watchmaker met Guccio Gucci which began a wonderful partnership lasting 25 years and resulting in Wunderman producing the world's first designer label watches. By 1972, the Severin Montres company was the official licensee for all Gucci wristwatches, manufacturing its designs in the horological center of La Chaus-de-Fonds, Switzerland. In 1997, Gucci acquired Severin Montres and released the first wristwatch in its famous "G-watch" line-a series that incorporated the company's G logo into the timepiece's face as well as creating its first fully mechanical watch, using traditional Swiss technology.
Wunderman was a legend in the watch industry for his business acumen in building Gucci and then Corum into international successes in the luxury market and for his innovative watch designs and lines. This vintage Severin Montres ("watch" in French) has a heavy, sterling, asymmetrical bracelet that whispers an equestrian theme to me with the knot on one side of the bangle. The oval shape keeps the watch face sitting on the top of your wrist, not flopping over.
This is a wind-up watch that works perfectly-Swiss movement I would assume. In the photos I had it set for 11:00. You can see the minute hand moves as I was taking the photos. This fits an average sized wrist and measures approx. 2 1/4 inches wide. The watch face is 1 inch by 3/4 inch.
With the two classic Gucci colors of dark green and red on the face, I suspect it may have been one of the first designs they produced. I have found another watch with the identical shape face also with a sterling bracelet that has the name Gucci on it with the back marked Made in France just like this one. Also note the extra nice finishing touch of the green cabochon on the winder. This is in very good condition with only a few scratches on the thick glass face. The sturdy sterling bracelet segments have a lovely aged patina. Enjoy!
