Lalique Vase "Bagatelle" Rare Post World War II Acid Mark

This vase will only be listed till the end of May.

For your buying pleasure we have a STUNNING crystal vase from the Lalique Company of France. It features twelve fat little birds nestled in recessed pockets amongst the foliage. The original design for this BEAUTIFUL piece of Lalique art glass was created by the amazing French glass master, Rene Lalique, in 1939. The majority of this FABULOUS chunk of crystal, has a frosted or satin finish with a contrasting, clear, top and bottom with polished rims. There is an acid mark on the bottom along the outside edge that reads; "LALIQUE CRISTAL FRANCE". The Lalique mark has evolved over the years as the company has gone through changes. In the beginning years, pieces were marked with 'R. Lalique'. After the death of Rene in 1945 the 'R' was dropped and only 'Lalique' was used. At that time his son, Marc, took over the reigns of the company and they shifted from making their pieces out of glass to crystal. In addition to dropping the 'R.' there have been several variations in the way the mark was applied to the crystal and what it read. The mark on this piece was only used for a very short period of time between the death of Rene and after the change from glass to crystal. According to my research the mark, "LALIQUE CRISTAL FRANCE", was used after 1945 for a short time and is rather rare in the market place. This vase is considered a modern, post war example. If it had the 'R' in front of the Lalique mark it would be worth a substantial amount of money. I am selling this for a friend who is downsizing some of the things that she no longer needs and that her family is not interested in. She and her husband received this from his mother a couple of years after they were married in 1957. It was not brand new then. This is not a discontinued design and is still being made today. For me as a collector, I tend to want a rarer version of something I collect and the mark on this one makes it fall into that category in my opinion.

This piece is quite heavy, weighing 5 1/2 pounds. It measures 7" tall by 5 1/2" at the widest point across the middle by 4 1/4" across the top by just under 3" across the base. The condition is great for it's age of around 60 years, with NO chips, cracks or repairs. There is a teeny tiny little speck of a nick inside rim near where the frosted section starts. It is hard to see on first inspection but must be mentioned for accuracy purposes. The only other blemishes to report are some expected surface scratches on the underside from being mostly on display in a china cabinet these many years. Those surface scratches make it difficult to read the acid mark on the base. Acid marks on pieces of this age are difficult to find and read anyway, just by the nature of the mark. This one is very hard to locate and impossible to photograph. I assure you it is there. I collect old Czechoslovakian perfume bottle from the 1930s. They are usually marked with an acid mark similar to this, they are often extremely hard to find also. You have to hold the glass at just the right angle in just the right light and maybe you will see it. That is the case with this mark. I drew a thin black line on the glass where the mark can be located. The black marker can easily be removed with a little alcohol on a paper towel. Please view the photos as an integral part of the listing.
