Pair of French Brass Whale Oil Lamps – Circa: Mid 1800's
The unmarked wick adjustment mechanism unscrews easily and reveals a metal spring surrounded by black cotton batting-like material that may have aided in stabilizing the flow of oil during use. No attempt was made to remove this material. These wonderful whale oil lamps are in very good to excellent condition with a few minor scratches and a minor ding to the exterior of the oil chamber of each and are remarkably intact for their age complete with the burners.
We were unable to unscrew the wick adjustment mechanism marked "Gardon". There is no apparent damage to it or cross threading so we decided to leave it up to the new owner of the lamp. Also please note that although these lamps are very well matched, there are some slight design differences in the stems and around the top of the oil chamber.
This exquisite pair of antique brass whale oil lamps each is 10 inches tall, 4 inches in diameter at the base, the oil chamber is about 2 ½ inches wide and they weigh 2 pound 8.4 ounces together. They make for a handsome and stunning display of a long gone by era!
