This is a fabulous miniature Dutch windmill combined with an ornate bracket large enough to hold old fashioned calling cards or a match box but not large enough for modern business cards. The blades on the windmill move about freely and are securely attached to the windmill by a center silver peg. The base of the windmill is ornately decorated in floral designs and enhanced by sailing ships and Dutch icons.
This striking and exquisitely detailed piece is clearly hallmarked with 830 for the purity of the silver used, slightly less than the sterling silver standard of 925 and also visible are the maker's mark HH for Herbert Hooijkaas from Schoonhoven Netherlands. This gorgeous bit of Dutch silver artistry also hallmarked with the Dutch sword mark used from 1906 – 1953 along the edge of one of the windmill sails and the same mark appears on the base of the piece abutted by a key to indicate that this wonderful 830 silver windmill/card holder was made for export. The key symbol was used to indicate goods intended for export up until 1953.
This lovely piece is in mint condition with not dents, scratches or repairs; the sails on the windmill even rotate smoothly! This wonderful item weighs 1.6 ounces; the base measures 3 ¾ inches by 1 inch, is 2 ¾ inches tall to the top of the windmill sail and the cardholder measure 1 ½ by ½ inches and is 1 ¼ inches tall.
