This oil on masonite by Frank Handlen is a perfectly executed and visually stunning rendition of the Maine Coast – "Sea and Sand" - and framed in a beautifully accented lemon gold. Handlen so easily captures the beauty surrounding him with his paint brush and pallet. The richness and depth expressed in "Sea and Sand" is above measure. The colors are crisp and vibrant and only pale in comparison to the actual ocean view itself. You can actually hear the crash of the waves, inhale the scent of the ocean, and feel the whisper of sea breeze just by viewing his painting!
A self-taught artist who grew up in New Jersey, Handlen first came to Maine in 1940. He is described as a "master" and a "giant" of the genre by his peers, Handlen paints atmospheric canvasses of ships and foaming seas and rock-bound coastlines that grace mantelpieces around the nation and are included in corporate collections from major insurance companies to Sears. Handlen now 97 remains active and continues to paint in and around Kennebunkport, Maine.
Handlen's "Sea and Sand" painting measures 21" x 17 ½" and by sight size is 15 ½" x 11 ½". It weighs 3 pounds and 4 ounces and is in like-new condition without repairs or any wear.
What an absolute spectacular gift for that marine and coastal enthusiast! To own a Handlen painting is like owning a piece of the Maine coast!
