Palissy Majolica Plate with Sculpted Sea Crab in Sand – Circa: 1860’s

The Catch of the Day! This is a fabulous piece of Palissy Majolica featuring a ruby red sculptured crab sitting amidst his own familiar habitat of sand, mussels, and other sea creatures. The rich earth tone colors of green, yellow, brown and the blue of the mussels, help transform this three-dimensional piece into a vivid and incredible life-like beach scene. Modeled after the ground breaking techniques founded by craftsman Bernard Palissy, our crab charger is simply amazing.

Bernard Palissy, 1510-1590, the great Renaissance French potter, created a style of ceramic art that enjoyed widespread popularity in the sixteenth century, and was often imitated during his lifetime and for many years thereafter. Nearly 250 years after Palissy's death, Charles-Jean Avisseau, a middle-aged French ceramist, rediscovered the lost secrets of Palissy which energized a revivalist movement that would last until the beginning of the twentieth century. Coiled vipers, slinking lizards, scaly fish, and water flora amid a realistic pond settingthese characteristic Palissy images created in high-relief ceramics and painted as in nature can be found in many of the world's great museums.

Our Palissy Majolica Crab Charger is 13 inches in diameter, 3 inches in height (including the crab), and weighs 4 pounds, 9.4 ounces. It is not marked on the underside but is clearly in the style of Palissy Majolica produced in the mid 1800's. The underside does have four holes by which it can be suitably and securely hung. With the exception of some minor glaze loss to one of the tips of one of the shells, (shown in the picture) this piece is otherwise in excellent condition with no repairs or additional chips or flakes.

This would surely be an exceptional addition to your already fine Palissy Majolica collection or a wonderful keepsake gift for that special beachcomber in your life!
